Egyptian students called for a boycott of high school exams for fear of the spread of the Corona virus between them, after the Minister of Education Tariq Shawky did not retract the date of the scheduled exams later in the month, and rejected the students ’previous demands to postpone the exams or put alternatives.

Under the title (# boycott_exams_3th) tens of thousands of tweeters participated in the mark launched by students, and issued social networking sites in Egypt to demand the cancellation of exams, where some of them said that students ’lives are more important than high school exams, and others held the Minister of Education responsible.

Shawky had set June 21 as the date for the start of secondary school exams, at a time when Egypt witnessed during the past few days a clear escalation in the reported infection rates with Corona virus, as it exceeded 1500 infections daily.

With the spread of news about the Egyptian government's tendency to postpone the exams, Shawky confirmed yesterday, Monday, that the exams will be conducted on time with complete insurance and sterilization, noting that everything that is circulating in relation to the secondary school, other than the official channels, is unfounded and is not based on any information.

In televised statements, Shawky said that the decision of the high school exam is a state decision, which is taken collectively and not an individual decision, noting that the signs that have spread during the past days to demand the postponement of the exams are held by electronic committees, adding that it is "a war to exhaust the state and exhaust parents." But, strangely enough, he accused Al-Jazeera of being involved in that.

The Egyptian minister added that postponing examinations without a specific date is a big problem, especially as it will affect the next academic year, and that deferring an entire year will create a crisis in universities, where there will be two batches of students, and there are places for only one batch.

The minister retreated and refused to take the exams electronically, or merely a research presented by the students, noting the cases of fraud in those methods in the recent years of transportation, which is an implicit admission of failure, as the minister himself repeatedly emphasized the success of the experiment.

Shawky stressed that the Ministry of Education has taken all measures to protect students during exams, by reducing the numbers inside the committees, providing masks and means of purification and sterilization, and organizing entry to the exam committees in queues, while leaving a distance of two meters between each student.

A few days ago, the students launched several labels such as (# Minister_Himot_3th_Yaris), and (# Our Life_Major_Official_Examinations), during which they shared information about escalating injuries and deaths due to Corona, and denounced the Ministry of Education's insistence on endangering students ’lives, according to what they said.

And students expressed their anger at the insistence of the Minister of Education and the government to conduct the exams on time, without taking into account the demands of students and parents, especially with the high numbers of people infected with Corona virus in Egypt, and the authorities expected that the peak of the spread of the virus during the coming period.

Some of them compared the authorities ’continuous criticism of the Egyptian people’s awareness of the crowding in the streets and the means of transportation, and the insistence on crowding the high school exams, which are also accompanied by crowds in front of schools, because many parents are keen to wait for their children and support them during the exam.

Others expressed disappointment at the minister’s position, as well as the difficulty of the boycott’s success, but they said that the boycott’s invitation was their last weapon in the battle with the education minister.
