Gaizka Garitano has extended his coaching contract for Athletic Bilbao, which expired this summer, until June 2021, the Spanish first division club said on Sunday.

"Very pleased with the confidence shown by the club," said the Basque in a press release from Athletic, whose first team he has led since December 2018.

Garitano has since played 61 games on the Bilbao bench, finishing eighth in Liga in 2019 when the team was relegated when it arrived.

This year, he managed to hoist the Athletic in the King's Cup final against Real Sociedad, which remains to be played on an unknown date. In La Liga, Athletic was in 10th place when it was interrupted in mid-March due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

"The adventure we have had in the Cup this season has been wonderful and we have the opportunity to win a trophy," said Garitano.

La Liga must resume on June 11 after a three-month hiatus due to the health crisis.
