The Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Sunday evening that two officials at the Pakistani embassy in New Delhi were expelled on charges of "involvement in espionage activities", as tension escalated between the two nuclear neighbors.

"The government has declared the aforementioned officials two persons undesirable for their involvement in activities inconsistent with their mission as members of a diplomatic mission," the Indian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

"The Chargé d'Affairs of Pakistan has been requested to ensure that no member of the diplomatic mission is involved in activities hostile to India, or to act in a manner inconsistent with their diplomatic status," the statement added.

The Indian authorities have ordered the Pakistani diplomats to leave the country "within 24 hours".

Relations between the two countries have been strained in the recent period due to India's decisions against Muslims in the disputed Kashmir region with Pakistan.

Since their separation and independence from Britain in 1947, India and Pakistan have fought three wars, two of them over Kashmir.

Since 1989 the Indian side of Kashmir has witnessed armed confrontations that have claimed more than 70,000 lives, most of them civilians. And the people of the region are demanding independence or joining Pakistan.

It is noteworthy that India deployed more than 500 thousand soldiers in the part under its control from the Kashmir region.
