A 10-year-old girl died in eastern Algeria during a violent exorcism (roqya) session, which has generated shock in the country, since the "healer" or raqui was arrested on Thursday.

The prosecution in Guelma (500 km east of Algiers) announced the arrest of the man after the death of the girl "who suffered ill-treatment during a roqya to which she was subjected at home."

No information was provided on the reasons why the minor had been subjected to that exorcism session on Wednesday.

According to the prosecution's statement, reproduced by the media, the girl died on arrival at the Guelma hospital emergency department , where "signs of blows and burns on her body were found."

The prosecution has ordered an autopsy to be carried out and an investigation into what happened . Exorcists are often called upon to heal the sick, "cast out the devil," protect themselves from the evil eye, or to aid sterile wives.

Although Islam allows exorcism, considering it legal because it is done with the word of God, through the recitation of the Koran, many denounce that this practice is often the work of unscrupulous people who abuse the anguish of the sick, especially those suffering from mental and spiritual illnesses.

On social media, many internet users expressed anger at the girl's death during what some of them have defined as a "torture session" at the hands of a 28-year-old "executioner".
