United We Can, partner of the PSOE Government, again distanced itself from the Socialist Party. In a manifesto, the party of Vice President Pablo Iglesias demands from the Constitutional Court (TC), together with an amalgam of independence and nationalist formations, the "immediate freedom" of the president of Òmnium Cultural, Jordi Cuixart, and the former leader of the National Assembly Catalan, Jordi Sànchez.

The document presented this Friday describes as "unfair" the sentence to nine years in prison imposed by the Supreme Court for its involvement in the illegal referendum of October 1, 2017. And calls for a reform of the Penal Code to repeal the crimes of rebellion and sedition, always in line with a recent report by Amnesty International.

In addition to Unidas Podemos, the text ERC, Junts per Catalunya, the CUP, Bildu, the PNV, the BNG, the Bloc Nacionalista Valencià (which is part of Compromís) and Más País, the party of Íñigo Errejón, subscribe. The joint note is titled For the freedom of Jordi Cuixart and Jordi Sànchez and the defense of the exercise of fundamental rights . These formations share the Amnesty International report of last May 13 demanding the release of the Jordis and the annulment of their sentence, which they consider "excessive and" disproportionate ", after the Constitutional Court has admitted the amparo remedies against the sentence of the process .

Amnesty International calls on the Government to "substantially" review the crime of sedition to ensure that "legitimate" acts of "peaceful" civil disobedience are not "unduly criminalized" and thus do not jeopardize the freedoms of expression and peaceful assembly of the entire citizenship.

Podemos and the rest of the signatories express their rejection of the Jordis sentence , which they consider "unfair", and request that the Amnesty International report be taken into consideration by the Constitutional Court and the parties to the trial so that, in accordance with their conclusions, both are released "immediately".

Likewise, they demand that the Government promote a reform of the Penal Code that repeals or reforms the crimes of rebellion and sedition, since they consider that its application, as interpreted by the Supreme Court in the case of the Jordis , "is contrary to the principle of legality".

This manifesto comes a day after the second vice president of the government and Podemos leader, Pablo Iglesias, defended the Jordis in Congress , who for him are "democrats who should be part of the political debate."

This was stated during his appearance at the Commission for the Economic and Social Reconstruction of Spain after Covid-19, in which he also revealed his willingness to dialogue with former Catalan President and fugitive from Justice Carles Puigdemont, "whom many Spaniards vote, "he said.
