In a letter published on Twitter, Obama shares, among other things, an email he sent to a friend telling him he cried when he saw the video showing a policeman pressing his knee to George Floyd's neck until he loses consciousness.

"We must remember that for millions of Americans, it is tragic, painful, and upsetting enough 'normal' to be treated differently because of race," Obama writes.

"Can't be normal"

The ex-president further writes that it is necessary for the American people to work together to create a new normality where the legacy of prejudice and unequal treatment "does not color our institutions and our hearts".

“This should not be 'normal' in the United States by 2020. It cannot be 'normal'. If we want our children to grow up in a nation that meets their highest ideals, we can and must be better than this, ”Obama writes.
