In Brazil, the Carrefour group has been in turmoil since one of its subsidiaries is the subject of an investigation by the mayor of Sao Paulo in a corruption case. According to the first known elements, the investigation is linked to a criminal file concerning payments representing approximately 255,000 euros. They were carried out to inspectors of the municipality in order to exploit without authorization the seat of the subsidiary Atacadao as well as a store, reports the agency Reuters.

Representatives charged in March

"Since at least 2007, when Carrefour bought Atacadao, the administrative headquarters in Vila Maria and the adjacent store did not have a business license," prosecutor Robert Bodini told the news agency. The latter clarified that the license had finally been acquired by the subsidiary of Carrefour in 2015. Last March, four representatives of Atacadao had already been charged with corruption offenses in Brazil.

If the courts come to recognize the company's guilt, the latter could be fined 0.1% and 20% of its gross turnover for the year preceding the investigation. In 2019, Atacadao's gross turnover was estimated at around 7 billion euros and around 11.5 billion for the entire Carrefour Brasil group. The group has not commented on the matter yet.
