Afghanistan Taliban releases 80 detainees of the Afghan government

  Xinhua News Agency, Doha, May 28 (Reporter Yang Yuanyong) The Taliban in Afghanistan announced on the 28th that it released 80 Afghan government detainees in two batches that day in response to the Afghan government's previous release of the organization's detainees.

  A spokesman for the Taliban Political Office in the Qatar capital Doha, Suhaile Shahin, posted on social media that day, the Taliban issued travel expenses and clothes to the released persons.

  Shahin said that the Taliban has sent a five-member technical team to Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan. The purpose is to confirm the identity of Taliban detainees, solve the technical problems facing the release of detainees, and promote the release of detainees.

  The Taliban announced on the night of the 23rd that they will implement a three-day ceasefire with the Afghan government during Eid al-Fitr from the 24th. President Ghani welcomed the Taliban ’s statement and instructed the Afghan security forces to also cease fire for 3 days. On the 24th, Ghani announced that it would release 2,000 Taliban detainees to advance the peace process in Afghanistan. The Taliban welcomes this decision of the Afghan government.

  The exchange of detainees between the Afghan government and the Taliban is part of the peace agreement reached between the United States and the Taliban. As of May 10, about 1,000 Taliban detainees and about 200 Afghan government detainees were released, but the subsequent process of exchanging detainees was interrupted by a dispute between the two parties.
