Something new in the Steve case. The Rennes prosecution has opened two new judicial information as part of the investigation into the controversial police operation which had led to the death of Steve Maia Caniço during the Fête de la musique 2019 in Nantes.

While judicial information "against X" for "manslaughter" has been open since summer 2019 in this case, the public prosecutor of Rennes Philippe Astruc indicated this Thursday that in total "three judicial information" are investigated in Rennes by the same instructing magistrate.

Two new judicial information

One is open "against X" for "involuntary injuries, failure to assist a person in danger, endangering the life of others and intentional violence without ITT by a person holding public authority", specifies the prosecutor, confirming information from the journal Ouest-France . A complaint to this effect had been lodged by lawyer Marianne Rostan for 89 plaintiffs concerning the offenses of voluntary violence by person holding public authority, endangering the life of others and failure to assist person in danger.

The lawyer hopes that some of her clients will be heard during the investigations "to understand how they experienced this scene". "The fact that there is an investigation also makes it possible to bring a civil action, to have access to the file and to finally understand what happened," she added.

Steve's family soon received by the examining magistrate

Third judicial information "against X" for "willful violence with a weapon, in a meeting and against a person holding public authority and damage to a meeting of a public utility good with regard to the taking of part of the forces of the 'ordre' is also open in Rennes, where the file, which was initially examined in Nantes, has been disoriented.

According to the prosecutor, "the investigations carried out focus at this stage on all of the technical expertise tending to have the most exhaustive view possible of the development of the facts".

"They will complement the numerous testimonies already collected in the context of the investigations opened after the facts by the Nantes prosecution", underlines Philippe Astruc, adding that "no indictment has yet taken place".

The investigating magistrate will soon receive Steve's family "to give them the primacy of these technical elements," added the prosecutor.

A drama that had aroused strong emotion and sharp criticism

The disappearance of this 24-year-old extracurricular animator, whose body was found on July 29 in the Loire, aroused strong emotion and strong criticism of the intervention of the police on the night of 21-22 June.

Participants in the sound system on the banks of the Loire reported having been blinded by a cloud of tear gas, several had fallen into the river. Steve Maia Caniço did not know how to swim, according to his relatives.
