Previously, it was only "yellow light" for the Baltic herring, but now it has been on the list of fishes that are advised not to eat completely. This is because recruitment, the amount of new fish, has been record low in the area for the last four years.

"It is the stocks that have gone down, why we do not know for sure, but the stocks are bad," says Håkan Wirtén, secretary general of WWF Sweden who annually updates his fishing guide.

Fishing stop in summer

In the autumn, the EU decided to put a stop to all herring fishing for four months this summer from the southern coast of Skåne and up to Öland, as it does not want to interfere during the threatened Baltic Sea cod period. The decision has sparked a lot of protests and reactions from the fishing industry along the coast.

However, according to WWF, the solution to the herring's problems, however, is to significantly reduce fishing - and on consumers' consumption of herring from the Baltic Sea.

- There are herring elsewhere to consume and buy, says Håkan Wirtén.
