“It is gratifying that we can now eat several fish with good conscience. Several species have been developed in the right direction and a management plan has been developed for Vätternfisket. Positive changes are also underway for other lakes, which we welcome if we are going to be able to eat more locally caught fish in the future, says WWF Secretary General Håkan Wirtén, Secretary-General of the World Wildlife Fund WWF.

Vättern's char has been a grieving child for a long time. But now the stocks are on recovery and the management plans look good, according to Håkan Wirtén

- Yes, it is great fun that the char now goes up to green light, a good choice simply.

The sick in Vättern also get green light. Wild-caught signal crayfish, on the other hand, have yellow light, which means you have to be careful.

The water feels better but threatened in the very long term

How else does Vättern feel today?

- Relatively good if you compare with the middle of the 20th century when it was eutrophication and sewage that went straight out. Also toxins, such as dioxin and PCBs. That has recovered and many of the old sins have been fixed, but not all. However, the clarity of the water has returned and is back as 100 years ago, says Håkan Wirtén.

The water heats up slightly every year. How threatened is the lake in the long run?

- The water is very deep so it takes a long time for the lake to be warmed by, for example, climate change. But in the long term, a cold water ecosystem like Vättern will be affected, but it will probably take time.
