Kenyan double world and Olympic champion David Rudisha will not be able to resume training for four months after fracturing his left ankle, the surgeon who operated on him on Thursday told AFP.

"We performed the operation today and he will stay overnight (at the hospital). There will be further examinations tomorrow (Friday)," said Dr Victor Bargoria, before adding that he would need sixteen weeks before resuming training.

The 31-year-old athlete, a gold medalist at the London (2012) and Rio (2016) Olympics, fractured his ankle on May 19 in his hometown of Kilgoris, in western Kenya.

World record holder in the 800m (1: 40.91), Rudisha was unable to participate in the World Championships in Doha last September due to a knee injury.
