Federal officials disclosed the identity of the suspect who was killed at a "terrorism-related" shooting location at a US Navy air base in Texas on Thursday, noting that he is named as Adam Aleem Al-Sahli, 20, a Syrian-born American.

An FBI official confirmed the suspect's name and age to Reuters in an email, and no further details have been released on the suspect yet.

CNN had quoted sources familiar with the preliminary investigation as confirming that the attacker was a supporter of Salafi jihadism.

The FBI said the gunman opened fire Thursday morning at Corpus Christi, wounding a member of the al-Qaeda security forces, without killing anyone but the attacker.

Little circumstances

For its part, Leah Graves of the FBI said on Thursday that the incident is being treated as "linked to terrorism", but that the official details of the circumstances of the attack remained slim.

A New York Times spokeswoman quoted an Al Qaeda spokeswoman as saying that a man in a car approached one of the gates and started shooting at a guard who was wounded, but that he was able to activate a barrier that prevents entry permanently. The spokeswoman added to the newspaper that al-Qaeda members returned fire and the gunman was neutralized.

Meanwhile, the US Navy announced that the sailor injured in the attack - a member of the al-Qaeda security force - was in good condition and was discharged from hospital.

Last December, a Saudi gunman killed three American sailors in an attack at the Pensacola Naval Base in Florida, days after an American sailor shot three civilians at Pearl Harbor Military Base in Hawaii, killing two of them and then committing suicide.
