The virtual candidate of the United States Democratic Party for the White House, former Vice President Joe Biden, unleashed a new controversy on Friday, suggesting that African Americans who hesitate to vote for him or do it for President Donald Trump are not really black.

Biden, former Vice President of Barack Obama between 2009 and 2017, made this comment during an interview on the radio program 'The Breakfast Club', popular with the black community and presented by Charlamagne Tha God.

During the interview, Charlamagne questioned Biden that he is considering electing Senator Amy Klobuchar as vice-presidential when black voters who "saved her political life in the primaries" want an African American woman.

Biden declined to acknowledge that Klobuchar was one of the options, but said "there are several black women under consideration . "

He added, however, that "if you have a problem deciding whether to go with me or Trump, then you are not black."

African-Americans are the most loyal demographic of the Democratic Party, and in the 2016 White House election they opted for almost 90% of Hillary Clinton.

Biden retracted hours after his comment, when the controversy had already erupted, admitting that he had gone from "arrogant".

"I know the comment has seemed as if I was taking the African American vote for granted, but nothing could be further from the truth," said the former vice president.

Those responsible for the campaign for the reelection of the Republican Trump, meanwhile, accused Biden of being "racist" .

"Joe Biden dictating who is and who is not black is the height of arrogance for the Democratic elite," said campaign manager for current US President Brad Parscale.

According to US media, among the African-American women that Biden is shuffling as vice presidents are Senator Kamala Harris, Congresswoman Val Demings and former Georgia Governor candidate Stacey Abrams.

Other loud-sounding applicants include Klobuchar herself, Senator Elizabeth Warren or Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer.
