May 22, 2020 Taiwan takes the field in defense of Hong Kong and urges Beijing to avoid "greater chaos" in the Special Administrative Region of China, after the announcement of a national security law wanted by China. It also invites to start the dialogue with the company of the former British colony. The Chinese Communist Party, according to a note issued by the Taipei Office for Relations with China, was wrong to blame the external influences and the "separatists" of Hong Kong for the instability in the territory. "The laws of any civil society should be an umbrella to protect people, rather than chain their freedoms."

"For the chaos, Hong Kong has fallen sharply in the global charts. Now is the time to put an end to all this." This is what the Beijing tabloid Global Times writes in an editorial published by the People's Daily, organ of the Chinese Communist Party, in the aftermath of the announcement of the proposed national security law in Hong Kong. "Throughout 2019, Hong Kong has not had a single day of peace," writes the Beijing newspaper, and has become "like a city in an underdeveloped country overwhelmed by riots." With the new law, the Global Times concludes, "the status of a special administrative region will be consolidated" and will prevent it from being "sabotaged by international issues".
