  • After more than two months of pause due to the epidemic of Covid-19, the second round of the municipal elections will take place, a priori, on June 28.
  • Three lists can be maintained for the second round: Martine Aubry (PS), Stéphane Baly (EELV) and Violette Spillebout (LREM).
  • In the first round, two thirds of the voters abstained.

We left for a 2nd round. After more than two months of hiatus due to the epidemic of Covid-19, the municipal elections are resuming their course. In Lille, where the outgoing mayor (PS), Martine Aubry, came first (29.8%), two other lists are allowed to remain for the June 28 poll: those of Stéphane Baly (EELV) and Violette Spillebout (LREM). State of the forces involved.

The return of the abstainers?

The first unknown - and it is significant - concerns the behavior of abstainers in the first round. About two-thirds of the voters had not moved on March 15. Never has the abstention rate been so high for a first round of municipal elections. The difference in number of votes between the three Lille candidates is therefore very small.

"I count on the votes of the abstainers and the mobilization of those who no longer want Martine Aubry", underlines Violette Spillebout who had obtained 17.5% of the votes. Its delay on the mayor of Lille amounts to approximately 4,900 votes.

Martine Aubry in favorable waivers, but?

Environmentalists, led by Stéphane Baly (24.5%), will resume contact with Martine Aubry, a historic ally, but also with LFI (8.8%) to try to form a common list. Difficult to imagine the three lists merging, but EELV is in a position to play the referees. "The balance of power has changed compared to 2014. An alliance with Martine Aubry will only happen with a change in governance method," said EELV.

In a press release, the mayor of Lille also calls for union: “Lille needs to unite the energies of all women and all men (…) who are committed, like us, to the fight against inequalities, to social justice, ecological transition and sustainable economic development. Today I call on those who share this desire (…) to come together with us ”.

Violette Spillebout, alone against everyone?

Mathematically, an alliance between Martine Aubry and Stéphane Baly would ruin almost all hope for Violette Spillebout. But the equation is far from being resolved because the agreement between is not in good shape, we are assured in both camps.

The big loser in the 1st round (8.2%), Marc-Philippe Daubresse (LR) must assemble his troops early next week to decide on the strategy to follow. There too, a list fusion seems very random because Violette Spillebout, assures, already, for her part, to have "no concern for political alliance". "We remain determined to renew political faces," she says.

The final deposit of the lists is scheduled for June 2.
