The Council of State has ordered the government to lift the ban on assembly in places of worship. A very delicate mission for the authorities, faced with the impatience of the faithful and the need to adapt the strict sanitary rules.

Churches, mosques and synagogues should soon be able to receive the faithful again. The State Council on Monday ordered the government to lift the ban on assembly in places of worship, but many questions remain unanswered. The government is facing a real headache, between the impatience of believers and the need to adapt health rules to avoid any risk of contagion. The countdown has started, since the authorities have less than five days to find a solution.

Wearing a mask and social distancing

The ordinance of the Council of State qualified the prohibition of the assemblies in the places of worship of "disproportionate", even if the objective is to preserve the public health. Clearly: it constitutes a serious and unlawful interference with the fundamental freedom to be able to practice one's religion.

Matignon, in conjunction with the Ministry of the Interior, in charge of worship, must therefore propose to adjust the rules in force and make them less strict. The authorities could, for example, authorize religious ceremonies with the wearing of a mask, respect for barrier gestures and physical distances.

How to ensure that the rules are applied?

But the problem always remains the same: how to ensure that these rules are applied, to avoid any risk of contagion? The police cannot go and control the faithful during the ceremony and the religious leaders do not want to take on this responsibility either.

The solution is therefore very complicated to find. But the days pass and the wait is high, especially among Muslims, who pray to be able to celebrate the end of Ramadan this weekend.
