May 20, 2020 - Federal Court of Virginia authorized explorers to cut Titanic's hull and remove and bring back Marconi's wireless telegraph, one of the first buildings of the time and used to sound the alarm after the ship's collision with the iceberg.

It is the first time that a judge has issued such an authorization. Until now, explorers have studied the hull only from the outside, collecting objects that were in the vicinity of the wreck. In 2019, the agreement between the USA and Great Britain entered into force, under which companies from the two countries can operate on the site of the Titanic disaster exclusively on the basis of special permits issued from time to time.

Since 2012, a hundred years after the sinking, the Titanic has been placed under the protection of UNESCO under the Convention on the protection of the underwater cultural heritage. The hull of the Titanic is rapidly disintegrating and, according to expert estimates, objects of historical interest would be recoverable within 15 years at the latest.
