20 May 2020Iraqi intelligence has arrested Abdul Nasser Qardash, considered a privileged candidate to succeed Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi at the helm of ISIS. Several Iraqi media quoted by Al Arabiya make this known.

"Today, the terrorist named Abdul Nasser Qardash, the candidate to succeed the criminal al-Baghdadi, has been arrested," says the Iraqi National Intelligence Service's statement that the capture "came after careful intelligence work ".

Qardash - Al Arabiya still points out - was one of the candidates to succeed al-Baghdadi, who was killed by US forces in a raid on the Syrian city of Idlib last October. The latest attack that led to the capture and arrest of Qardash comes a month after Mustafa al-Kadhimi, a former Iraqi intelligence chief, became the country's prime minister.
