Municipal 2020: the scientific council not opposed to a ballot in June

The scientific council gave its opinion on the organization of the second round of municipal elections in the 5,000 municipalities where the mayor was not elected on March 15. He does not oppose an election in June, but makes recommendations on the health rules to be observed during the campaign and the vote. Above all, he asked for a new assessment of health conditions fifteen days before the election.

The ball is in the government's court. It is up to him to set a date for the second round of the 2020 municipal elections . The scientific council can only make recommendations. The June 28 option is being considered. It would be the last limit to organize only the second round. If the poll was postponed to September or later, then the two rounds would have to be repeated.

After the episode of the first round which the opposition had asked to maintain on March 15, but then reproached the government for the organization of the ballot, the executive is on its guard and plans to request a debate and a vote in Parliament for let everyone take responsibility publicly on the date. A vote which the president of the Senate Gérard Larcher said he did not want, considering that it is up to the government to decide. Which makes a minister say, " I am wary of the opposition that on June 10 will say, is that very reasonable?" "

According to the same minister, the government should reveal its intentions during the week. The President of the National Assembly, the macronist Richard Ferrand, has already estimated that a vote at the end of June was not " reasonable ". Édouard Philippe is to consult with party leaders on Wednesday May 20 and Emmanuel Macron is today in a videoconference with mayors to take the temperature before deciding.
