Annoyed to see more and more masks and gloves thrown on the ground by the Lyonnais, the garbage collectors of the capital of the Gauls launch an appeal to civic-mindedness. In addition to dirt, this waste can potentially represent a danger to their health.

"Do not throw the masks in the street, or the parks and gardens, put them in the trash cans please!" It is a real call to good citizenship pushed by the 1,000 roadmakers from Lyon, these foot scavengers who pick up the waste with pliers. Since deconfinement, they find every morning more and more masks and gloves on the ground. A phenomenon which is gaining momentum and which worries them all the more because they fear for their health.

"There are more and more !"

"There are more and more !" provides the microphone for Europe 1 Mohammed Messai, one of the Lyonnais roadmakers. "The more people wear a mask, the more they throw them away. We are hired at 6 am, and we see a lot of them at the foot of buildings, in gutters, on sidewalks ..." In a tweet, the garbage collectors of the capital of Gaul even claims to see a mask or a pair of gloves "every two meters".

This morning, in one of the municipalities of the Metropolis of #Lyon, a #mask or #gloves every 2m ... Grand-Lyonnais (e) s, protecting yourself is good ... while also protecting the #environment is better! ⛔️We don't throw our #masks on the ground ... # grandlyon # garbage collectors # ripeurs # dechetspic.twitter.com / ZxMAUFWI5A

Some garbage collectors work with "fear in their stomachs"

"We have to pick them up, so we do it but of course we are afraid," admits Mohammed Messai. "The less we know about this disease, the more we are scared, some even have fear in their stomachs. These masks represent the disease."

On the front line during the confinement and supported by the inhabitants, the road workers therefore appeal to the population to stop it. "The Lyonnais, we love our city, we love our environment, so we make a little effort. Do not throw the masks in the street, or in parks and gardens, put them in the trash bins please!" A message all the more important since it is very likely that the Lyonnais use masks daily for many more weeks.
