An Israeli court sentenced an Israeli settler on Monday for the murders of a Palestinian baby and his parents, who were killed in the arson attack on their home in 2015 in the occupied West Bank.

Amiram Ben-Ouliel was also found guilty by the court in Lod (center) of attempted murder, arson and conspiracy to commit a racist crime.

A miraculous 4 year old child

In July 2015, an 18-month-old baby, Ali Dawabcheh, was burned alive while sleeping, after incendiary devices were launched against his house in Douma, between Nablus and Ramallah in the West Bank, the Palestinian territory occupied by Israel since 1967. His father Saad and his mother Riham, surprised like him in their sleep, had succumbed to their burns in the following weeks.

Only the baby's brother, Ahmed, then aged four, survived the tragedy. The sentence of Amiram Ben-Ouliel, who was the main suspect in this case, is not known immediately. The Israeli organization Honenou, which helped defend the accused, said it would go to the Supreme Court. Amiram Ben-Ouliel refused to testify during his trial and was convicted on the basis of his confessions during the interrogation.

Confessions Obtained Under "Torture Continues for Three Weeks"

His lawyer, Asher Ohayon, criticized on Monday radio Kan for using confessions obtained according to him under "continuous torture for three weeks" from Shin Bet, the Israeli internal security service. "It remains an incomplete act of justice because we are sure that the fire was not caused by a single person," regretted Nasser Dawabcheh, the baby's uncle, after the announcement of the conviction.

The triple murder had aroused strong emotion in the Palestinian territories but also abroad and in Israel. The Hebrew state had been criticized by human rights organizations for its "laxity" towards extremist Jewish groups. The Palestinians had accused Israel of "supporting" Jewish extremism.
