It was at 5.30 pm on Tuesday last week that an ambulance was alerted to Lerum. On a minor gravel road in the town, a moped had overturned, having been followed by a police patrol. Two young people had traveled on the moped, one of them a boy of 15 years. The boy later died of his injuries.

Now the two police officers who followed the mopedists are being investigated for possible misconduct.

"It is to investigate what has happened and if any police have committed a crime in connection with this," says Kajsa Lundgren, chief prosecutor at the special prosecution chamber.

No one is suspected of crime yet, she continues. The investigation is still in its infancy, and in the first instance, an attempt is made to get a clear picture of the course of events.

Received several complaints

Johan Lundberg is the police area manager in Alingsås, also responsible for Lerum. He says that some time before the accident, several complaints were received about trimmed mopeds which created concern in Lerum. On Tuesday, a patrol had tried to stop a moped.

- The patrol had seen a moped with two guys on and lay behind. They made a stop signal with blue and red light and then turned on the siren, says Johan Lundberg, Police Area Manager Alingsås.

The incident is still being investigated, he stresses. But right now the perception is that the mopedists refused to stop for the police signal and then weighed in on a smaller road. Johan Lundberg continues:

- The police patrol went after and saw in front of him that a pillar and a concrete suction came further down the road. Then they see how the moped is bouncing in the gravel and driving around.

A total of six ambulances and a helicopter were sent together with rescue services to the scene, admits SOS Alarm. However, the helicopter returned. It is unclear why so many care units were sent to the site.

A lot more

Johan Lundgren also does not want to comment on the internal investigation, but believes that there is much to be done for police to be dropped in such cases.

- It would be, for example, if you hunted in residential areas where children play, or that you were otherwise exposed to danger. That they were pushed and driven by those who rode the moped and were injured by it, he says.
