In June 2014, very few days before Felipe VI's proclamation as king of Spain, we were able to speak with Julio Anguita at the Ateneo de Madrid.

The former coordinator of Izquierda Unida, who died this Saturday in Córdoba after suffering a heart attack a week earlier, had published a book entitled 'Against blindness. 40 years fighting for utopia ' in which he made his position as clear as ever.

In those days, Juan Carlos I had just abdicated and Podemos had achieved historic results in the European Elections. In this interview, which can be seen in the video above , Anguita criticized bipartisanship and its attempts to perpetuate itself in power, explaining that a fervent republican like himself was understood by the republic:

"The republic is a very serious thing that transcends demonstrations , waving flags and it must be more than anti-monarchism . It has to be prepared. You cannot improvise in a speech or in a demonstration. I think that the republican movement, I've been saying it for years, you have to unite around a proposal for a republic. "
