Netanyahu and Gantz

May 17, 2020 The Knesset has voted confidence in the national unity government formed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former rival Benny Gantz.

With 73 votes in favor (12 more than the required majority) and 46 against, MEPs approved the 35th government in Israel's history. The executive will be led for the first 18 months by Likud Netanyahu leader, who will then hand over the helm to Gantz, head of the Blue and White party.

The new unity and emergency executive puts an end to a half-year political stalemate during which three elections have been called. In its first phase it will have as main objective to face the coronavirus crisis and its economic consequences.

Previously, always with 73 votes in favor, the Knesset had chosen Likud member Yarid Levin as its new president.
