A statistical report, prepared by the Dubai Statistics Center, in cooperation with the Community Development Authority and Dubai courts on divorce and marriage rates in Dubai over a period of four years, revealed a decrease in divorce by 35% between 2016 and 2019, where the divorce rate per 1000 among Emiratis decreased from 3.76 in the year 2016 to 2.44 in 2019.

This included divorce cases in which one or both parties are Emirati.

The report calculated the cases of divorce and marriage of Emiratis registered with the Dubai courts, regardless of the region to which the population belongs, which aims to accurately measure the rates, based on the surrounding social and environmental factors. The report also focused on one of the most accurate global factors in measuring divorce rates, based on measuring divorce rates for every 1,000 people.

It revealed a positive trend in the divorce rate gradually decreasing over the past four years, as the net divorce rate among married couples in the emirate showed a decrease from 11.95 in 2016 to 7.95 in 2019 by 33.5%.

The report showed a decline in marriage rates from 11.47 per 1,000 to 9.47, or 17%, whether the marriage parties are Emirati or one of them.

There are a number of ways to calculate marriage and divorce rates, based on various factors, indicating that the trend that prevailed in measuring these rates was based on a comparison of the annual rates of marriage and divorce transactions, It measures the difference between them, which does not give a clear impression of the reality of divorce in relation to the population and for the married population.

He added: «We worked over the years to study the best ways to measure divorce rates, which give us the closest results that can be compared globally, and can be used as a basis for making decisions related to supporting family stability. We expect that the results of this report are the closest to accuracy, especially as they deal with a variety of statistical factors, and are approved by global institutions. ”

He continued, "We note that the rates in Dubai are commensurate with the global average in this field, and we can accordingly, and based on more in-depth studies, examine the reasons, and develop development plans to enhance family stability and cohesion, and awareness plans in return to improve and increase the percentage of marriage."

Bin Huraiz continued: “The drop in marriage rates by 17% is something that we must take seriously, because we are in a young country, and we have a large percentage of young people of marriageable age, and we are working in the commission in cooperation with partners to develop plans to raise awareness of the importance of early marriage, and support those who are coming to marriage, To reduce this percentage and push it towards increasing rates. ”
