  • Since May 12, only a third of schools have reopened in Toulouse.
  • On May 25, 41 more schools will welcome students in addition to the 68 already open, the goal being to reopen them all on June 2.
  • To disinfect the premises, 140 recruitments of agents on temporary contracts are underway.

The news fell this weekend in the mailboxes of parents of students from the Pink City. After reopening 68 of the 206 schools on May 12, the Toulouse city hall and the rectorate indicated that an additional 41 will welcome pupils again from May 25.

That is to say 53% of the schools, more particularly those classified in “Priority education” and which will have an opening rate on this date of 73%. And the objective is to open all of the establishments by June 2, with priority given to elementary students.

"Progressive reopening strategy"

"We are continuing our strategy of gradual reopening rather than reopening in a hurry," says the mayor of Toulouse, Jean-Luc Moudenc (LR), pointing out that attendance at schools this week had been below expectations and even parent surveys. Still, some of them have returned to work and find themselves in difficulty in managing their children.

Finally, the Town Hall of @Toulouse wishes to reopen all the schools instead of 33%. It was time! When will it be?

“But until now, some of our agents had no childcare solutions, which was a real problem. The rectorate heard us so that they are educated as a priority, "says the mayor of Toulouse, Jean-Luc Moudenc (LR).

Recruitment of 140 agents

However, the total number of municipal staff will not be able to be 100% on deck to disinfect the schools, some of its members having in particular comorbidities, others being in childcare.

“Today, the health protocol is difficult to apply. There are currently four technical agents per school, but it takes six to seven or more, multiplied by 206 schools, so we are lacking agents. We are in the process of recruiting 140 agents on temporary contracts, we will also see internally and call on external service providers, ”explains Marion Lalane-de-Laubadère, education assistant.

These measures will therefore have a cost, but "the absolute criterion remains health security, it is non-negotiable".
