May 15, 2020 The drop in turnover and orders in March, on a trend basis, reached values similar to those recorded in the most acute moment of the crisis of 2008-2009. The only growing sectors are those of food and pharmaceutical products. Istat points out this, explaining that, corrected for the calendar effects (22 working days compared to 21 in March 2019), the total turnover drops in trend terms by 25.2%, with negative variations of 27.6% on the domestic market and 20.7% on the foreign one. In trend terms, the raw order index decreased by 26.6%, with decreases on both markets (-29.3% for the domestic market and -23.1% for the foreign market).

"Since Italy is the first country affected by the epidemic in Europe - observes Istat in the comment - the contraction of the internal market has been much more marked than the foreign one". And again: "The drop in turnover and orders, on a trend basis, has reached values similar to those recorded in the most acute moment of the crisis of 2008-2009. The only growing sectors are those of food and pharmaceutical products. The turnover in volume of the manufacturing sector it shows a slightly less marked tendential drop than that in value. in the correct figure for the calendar effects ".

The cyclical trend in turnover is much more negative for the domestic market, for which there is a decrease of 27.9%; the foreign market recorded a less marked drop of 21.9%. Similarly, the cyclical change in orders reflects a more marked contraction in orders from the internal market (-29.9%) than that recorded by orders from abroad (-21.4%).
