As the country most affected by the new coronavirus, the United States continues to cross very sad symbolic bars. The 80,000 deaths were passed Monday, according to the Johns Hopkins University count. Above all, this dramatic toll could be underestimated by several thousand, warned the American Centers for Disease Prevention and Control.

A declining daily balance sheet

The whole territory must not face the pandemic in the same way. The worst situation is in New York. The city alone accounts for a quarter of the deaths deplored, with nearly 20,000 deaths. In total, the United States should reach 103,000 deaths by May 30, according to an average of 20 epidemiological models produced by researchers from the University of Massachusetts.

But, for the first time since the beginning of April, the daily death toll recorded in the country passed Sunday below 1,000 people, with 776 deaths deplored over 24 hours. It is, however, too early to say whether this decline indicates a real trend. If the epidemic is receding in New York, new outbreaks have appeared elsewhere, such as in the capital region of Washington.

The virus at the heart of the White House

Despite these bad figures, Donald Trump once again congratulated himself on his management of the crisis on Monday. "We have developed an unrivaled capacity for testing (screening) in the world," said the White House tenant, stressing that "9 million" tests had been carried out in the country.

In addition to being concerned about the fate of the Americans, the White House is currently trying to limit the spread of the coronavirus within it. But the first cases are there. And the epicenter of American power is a place where social distancing is difficult to apply. Donald Trump, however, assured that the chances that members of his immediate circle, or himself, would be affected by the Covid-19 were minimal. But, at the same time, the American president raised the possibility of reducing his contacts with his vice-president Mike Pence, after a case of coronavirus in his entourage.

Above all, not everyone in the White House is as optimistic as Donald Trump. Kevin Hassett, the president's economic advisor, summed up last week the general feeling of a laconic formula: “It is scary to go to work. "
