  • Place des Quinconces, in Bordeaux, was chosen for the launch of the Drive-in Festival, a traveling event whose profits will be donated to cinemas in difficulty.
  • Saturday evening, at 9 p.m. Place des Quinconces, the film Hippocrates will be projected on a giant screen installed in front of nearly 300 cars in which only three spectators will be allowed.
  • The Grand Bain , Whiplash , Parasite or  En Liberté will follow  ! and this, while this Drive-In Festival should cross France, until the reopening of cinemas.

"Offering a little movie only after a week of progressive deconfinement, it can do good. Especially since the Drive-In Festival initiative is rather original and unique. Fabien Robert, first deputy mayor of Bordeaux, is rather "happy" to welcome the "first traveling cinema drive-in festival". And, this Saturday evening, when we haven't been able to quench our passion for dark rooms since March 17, we are also tempted to go and watch Hippocrates behind the windshield of our Twingo.

From 9 p.m., Bordeaux will launch this first post-containment Drive-In Festival, which will be installed until May 25 on Place des Quinconces. On the program nine other films, including Le Grand Bain (May 17), Les Invisibles (May 18) or  Tomboy (May 21) or  Le Sens de la Fête (May 24) but also animations (karaoke, blind test, etc.), or even discussions with the teams of the films screened. All this, while respecting health rules.

Allow the French to start dreaming again

"During the confinement, we tried to offer a varied cultural offer to Bordeaux residents, in particular thanks to street criers or free access to the digital library, we didn't want to let go during this progressive deconfinement," explains Fabien Robert, also vice President of Bordeaux Métropole. So we looked for what activity to offer to a lot of people while respecting the sanitary rules and then we came across this operator who works with the National Cinema Center (CNC) and got the festival to be launched in Bordeaux. "

The operator is Mathieu Robinet, a film producer who wanted to find a way "to help cinemas overcome the crisis and allow French people to start dreaming again by sharing a film in complete safety". Faced with a screen of more than 190 m2, nearly 500 spectators in some 300 cars (three people per vehicle or two parents and children from the same household) will be able to reconnect with the magic of cinema.

Profits donated "to cinemas and distributors in difficulty"

"The health standards will be drastic," assures Fabien Robert. Spectators will not even need to lower the windows of their vehicle. The sound system will, in fact, be via the radio, on a dedicated FM frequency, the ticket office will be 100% digital (booking on the Web here) and the tickets (printed or downloaded) will be scanned through the windows. It will also be forbidden to leave vehicles without a mask (protections will be distributed free of charge on site), these exits will be limited and the safety distances indicated by markings on the ground.

"We are well aware that promoting the use of the car is not the best way to approach the" next world "", finally assure the twenty volunteers of the Association Drive-In Festival, organizer of the event, on their website. They therefore undertake to calculate the carbon footprint of the festival and to offset it "by a donation to an environmental protection association". As for the profits, they will be donated “to small rooms in difficulty, knowing that the event is circumstantial, explains Fabien Robert. Everything will stop as soon as the rooms reopen, the idea is not to compete with them ”.
