Hasse Ekblom, 58, fell ill in covid-19 at the end of March, which Borås newspaper was the first to report. He and wife Anna Ekblom tell SVT News West how his condition worsened over the course of a week.

- After a week of fever, I noticed that he was sweating a lot, and was out of breath and skinny, says Anna Ekblom.

After a conversation with 1177, they went to Södra Älvsborg Hospital (SÄS). It turned out that Hasse Ekblom had only 82 percent oxygenation in the blood.

- The anesthetist came in and said "We'll probably sleep for eight to ten days". By then I had obviously said "Oh, what a good thing, then I can sleep well". But it's not something I remember myself.

Then it turns black.

A fog

After six days in the respirator, Hasse woke up. But it took him several days to understand that he was in a respirator. It has now been three weeks since he woke up, and the long road back has begun.

His wife Anna Ekblom also fell ill shortly after her husband. But her symptoms were far from so severe. She says that the time as a relative has been tough - but she has stayed strong.

- It was just trying to stay upright. Walk, walk around, talk a lot with others.

But the time that came strong came with a price. Only now that she knows that everything is going well does she begin to feel tired, and is considering contacting the health care psychologist for relatives.

It is unclear how long Hasse Ekblom's rehabilitation will take. A doctor said he could be back at work earlier in August.

- Probably he will not be fully restored until in a year. It is inconceivable that this can be so. But one can only be glad that things have gone well. Everything else is trivial, says Anna Ekblom.
