Dubai Municipality announced the treatment of more than 350 tons of contaminated medical waste, resulting from tests and treatment interventions related to (Covid-19) virus in clinics, hospitals, health care centers, laboratories, and laboratories, whether affiliated with the government sector or the private sector, in a facility Jebel Ali to treat the municipal hazardous waste, at an average of six tons per day until last April, as the treatment process is carried out according to the best environmental practices worldwide in the field of integrated waste management.

The Director General of Dubai Municipality, Eng. Dawood Al-Hajri said: “From the first day of the beginning of the crisis of the spread of the virus (Covid-19), we were keen on setting an integrated plan to deal with the waste of the various medical authorities at the emirate level, in coordination between the waste management and the crisis and emergency team in the municipality. The medical waste treatment stage is considered one of the important stages in the sustainable waste management system.

He added that since the beginning of the pandemic, the municipality has taken all measures and measures related to waste management in general, and medical waste contaminated and suspected to be contaminated with the Corona virus in particular, as it is transported directly from the various centers to the Jebel Ali facility for treating hazardous waste, and it is treated daily by medical waste treatment systems The allocated central to that, as it provided the facility with the best approved global environmental systems to ensure the safe disposal of these wastes, due to its special nature and to protect and sustain the environment.

The director of municipal waste management, Abdul Majeed Sefaye, said that all medical waste is dealt with accurately and technically according to the highest levels of occupational health and safety, but that medical waste contaminated with the virus (Covid-19) is given priority in treatment over the rest of other medical waste, In order to get rid of them as soon as possible, as the equipment, vehicles and the place are completely sterilized, to avoid any danger that may arise from dealing with such dangerous waste that is received around the clock within three shifts per day.

Corridors were added to sterilize employees, dealers and individuals involved in the transportation of biological waste.

Mobile medical waste station

Dubai Municipality reported that it recently contracted with a leading company specialized in the field of medical waste treatment to supply a mobile and advanced medical waste station.

The municipality stipulated that the station be able to receive medical waste contaminated with all types of infectious viruses, including the "Covid-19" virus, and that this station contains modern and advanced systems for handling all types of gases and emissions generated from treatment operations.

Special containers

Dubai Municipality distributed a circular to all the approved companies working in the field of waste management and its customers by providing special containers to collect the waste of masks, hand gloves, and other personal protection against the "Covid-19" virus used by the public, due to the specificity of dealing with this waste as it constitutes a danger to Public health, and it must be dealt with according to the procedures and measures adopted in this field.
