Coronavirus and deconfinement in Spain: Madrid remains in zero phase

Spain still recorded 229 deaths on a day over the weekend, the figures are better than at the height of the pandemic but still too worrying to deconfigure the entire territory. Madrid and Barcelona in particular will remain in zero phase as currently and again for several days, while many were preparing for the reopening.

Puente de Vallecas, a popular district in the south of the capital. Here there are always people on the streets even before the authorized exit time. Madrid will not go into phase 1, which reassures Jessica who works as a nurse's aide in a hospital. "  I prefer not to go to phase 1 because there is going to be a second wave, and it will be stronger, " she said. And you see here ? There are conscious people who wear a mask but others do not. Everyone should wear it, in transport but also outside, it should be mandatory !  "

In a cafe in a narrow alley in the center of Madrid, which only sells take-out, the waitress Mikaela regrets the decision not to go to phase 1. "  I prefer to come to work here and earn 50 euros a day , but at least I have a salary at the end of the month, I have a little girl, you have to feed her ! There are a lot of people who have nothing left to eat, she explains. At least they could have let the terraces reopen ! I know it is dangerous to go out, but people need to work.  "

A little further down Huertas Street, Gloria and her husband have decided to close their doors, they are dismantling the sign of the small tourist restaurant they have been running for three years: "  We are closing because it is not viable! There is no tourism, we can no longer pay the 4,000 euros of rent per month, plus the rest, so we close. Even for phase 1, we could only open the terraces, but in this street terraces are prohibited. It would have been necessary to wait for July, August… Neighborhood restaurants can get away with their terraces and their customers, but here in the center it is very difficult.  "
