The village of Saint-Christoly-Médoc in Gironde lived a “surreal” day according to one of its inhabitants. A madman entrenched at his home and armed was shot down early in the afternoon by the GIGN. This 53-year-old man had previously injured a local resident this morning and then a gendarme.

According to Sud Ouest, the fifty-year-old known for alcohol problems in the village and unemployed would have first assaulted a neighbor with a knife around 6 am before locking himself up at home. When the police arrived, he started targeting them. A witness reports that the man fired regularly towards the forces, threatened to kill them and refused to surrender: the GIGN was therefore called, explains the public prosecutor of Bordeaux to the regional daily.

He succumbs to neutralization fire

“Around 2:15 pm, the individual appeared at the window of his home, his gun in hand, his finger on the trigger, ready to fire. A GIGN gendarme who was in the observation and security position then fired a neutralization shot, ”continues Frédérique Porterie. He died a few minutes later despite the rescue services.

The neighbor was slightly injured in the hand while the constable also suffered a minor injury. An investigation was opened into intentional violence with a weapon and attempted murder of a person holding public authority.
