• Direct: last minute of the coronavirus in Spain

The Government has complied with the pact reached with the Basque Nationalist Party on May 5, by virtue of which it lifts the restrictions imposed by the state of alarm on the electoral processes, pending since April 5, in the communities of Galicia and Basque Country. This is reflected in a resolution published today in the Official State Gazette.

In accordance with this rule, article 7 of the Royal Decree of March 14 is amended, declaring the state of alarm and a section is added to it according to which "the validity of the state of alarm will not constitute any obstacle to the development and carrying out the electoral actions necessary for the development of elections called to Parliaments of Autonomous Communities ".

In addition, a section is added in which it is stated that the Government, as long as the exceptional situation of alarm lasts, "will arrange for the public postal service, the notaries public and other services of its responsibility to contribute to the better development and conduct "of elections.

In this way, Galicia and the Basque Country can reactivate the electoral machinery, which was brought to a halt last March with the outbreak of the pandemic by Covid-19, when they consider it appropriate, given that, between the new call for elections and the effective celebration thereof, 54 days must elapse.

The possibility of resuming the path to elections in these two regions was one of the main claims raised last week by the Basque Nationalist Party as a condition of lending its support to the fourth extension of the state of alarm requested by the Government. The intention of the Lehendakari, Íñigo Urkullu , is to be able to celebrate the elections that should have taken place on April 5, in the month of July.
