Among the many topics discussed Thursday during the Prime Minister's press conference, the reopening of primary schools. The return of students is possible from Tuesday, perhaps a little later depending on the municipality, in reduced numbers. But what about the students who stay at home?

Tuesday, 80 to 85% of the 50,000 schools in France will reopen, but with very few staff. The so-called "priority" pupils (children of essential workers, pivotal classes GS, CP, CM2, pupils in precarious situations) will go to school from 4.5 days to a day or two per week. Out of nearly seven million students, only one million will resume next week, that is to say 15% of children in kindergarten and elementary. So if my child does not go back to school at all, what will happen to him?

No question of not making the students who stay at home work. For this, 34% of the teachers will be present in the schools. And there will be different situations.

Homework or distance learning

If the whole teaching team is physically at school, it is difficult to ask them to do a double day in class AND from a distance. In this case, your child, if he stays at home, will receive the homework that the teacher gives to others, with possibly a small complement of educational videos so that he understands the concepts discussed in class, but nothing more.

On the other hand, if some teachers have not been able to return to school, either because their spouse has a heart for example or that they themselves are diabetic or frail, then they will prepare the lessons at a distance, as at this moment, with a few hours of video lessons or phone calls and more personalized follow-up.

It may therefore not be the teacher or the usual teacher of your child who will provide the class remotely: in some schools, replacements have even been called in as backup.
