• Racial Tension: Hate Crimes Spread Across America

Once again, history repeats itself. The video of the murder of an unarmed young black man has sparked outrage in the United States. Police on Thursday detained two white men suspected of the death of Ahmaud Arbery, 25 , who was killed on February 23 while running on a sunny day in his residential neighborhood of Brunswick. A case that had gained notoriety this week with the release of a 28-second video with images of the shooting, recorded by a mobile phone.

The two white men have been identified by police as Travis McMichael, 34, and his father, Gregory McMichael, a 64-year-old former police officer, both residing in Brunswick. "Gregory and Travis McMichael were arrested for the murder of Ahmaud Arbery," the Georgia Bureau of Investigation reported on social media.

Both were charged with murder and aggravated assault, according to a statement posted on the office's website, and were sent to the Glynn County Jail.

In the recording, made by another neighbor in the neighborhood , Arbery is seen, unarmed and running down a residential street and approaching a white truck parked in the right lane, with a man standing behind. The images show the McMichael waiting for Arbery, in broad daylight.

When the young black man tries to circle the vehicle to continue on his way, he meets another man who is armed with a shotgun. An altercation ensues and as the runner and this man fight, the black man is shot, and soon after a second shot.

According to the police report, Gregory McMichael told officers that he thought Arbery was suspected of a series of robberies in the area and that on the day of the shooting, while in his yard, he had seen the young black man on the street.

Gregory McMichael said that he had taken his .357 Magnum and his son, a shotgun, and that they had gone out to chase Arbery. When they reached him, Travis McMichael got out of the truck with the shotgun, after which Arbery began to "attack him violently" according to the father, and the police report is collected. Travis shot Arbery twice.

"They took his life for nothing"

The victim's father told the PBS Newshour program Thursday that his son used to exercise in the area daily and that he was staying at his mother's house across the street. "I don't know why they racially prejudged him and ended him like this, when all he did was sports and running and taking care of his body because he had dreams," said Marcus Arbery. "Now all his dreams have disappeared, because they took his life for nothing."

At the suggestion that his son may have been involved in a robbery, Arbery said it was "a lie and a hoax ."

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp retweeted the announcement of the arrests, adding that "the investigation is ongoing," asking residents of the area to provide data. "I applaud @GBI_GA Director Vic Reynolds and his agents for their swift action. Justice will be served," he added.

Across the country, politicians and celebrities expressed outrage and called for the men to be tried for murder.

"The video is clear: Ahmaud Arbery was murdered in cold blood. My heart goes out to his family, who deserve justice and deserve it now," Joe Biden, the Democratic presidential candidate, wrote on Twitter.

Arbery "was killed by two white men, ON CAMERA, and the guys have not been arrested. Come on people," actress Zoë Kravitz said on Instagram before the arrests, with a message shared by figures like Billie Eilish and Kylie Jenner.

Some compared this case to the shooting death of another unarmed young black man, Trayvon Martin, by a guard in Florida in 2012.

"We are literally hunted EVERY DAY / EVERY TIME we leave the comfort of our homes," said basketball player LeBron James on Instagram.
