Indian police said that 14 migrant workers were killed under the wheels of a freight train, today, Friday, after they were exhausted by walking on their way back to their village and slept on the train track.


Tens of thousands of workers in major cities in India are returning home on foot after losing their jobs due to public isolation measures imposed to contain an outbreak of the Coronavirus since late March.
The Ministry of Railways said the freight train driver tried to stop him when he saw workers on the tracks in Maharashtra state in the west of the country.

In light of the general isolation, it was decided to suspend all public transportation. Therefore, migrant workers often have to travel long distances on foot to return home. The government extended public isolation until May 17.
Police said the workers were working for a steel company and were returning to their village in the neighboring state of Madhya Pradesh.
"They kept walking all night and they felt exhausted, so they fell asleep on the train track," an officer said.


An official said they were not likely to expect any train to come because public transport was interrupted by the isolation.
