- It's a very gratifying message. We have been working on this issue for a long time and it is a priority for the municipality to bring about the protection. This is an important safety and security issue for those who live and work in the vulnerable areas, but also important for the continued development of the municipality, ”says Carina Wutzler (M), the chairman of the local council, Vellinge municipality, in a press release on Thursday.

A large part of Vellinge's residents live in Skanör-Falsterbo, Ljunghusen, Höllviken and Kämpinge. A large part of the development in these areas is at levels lower than three meters above the current mean sea level of the sea. The municipality has therefore had the issue of protecting existing buildings high up on the agenda for many years.

Today's message was awaited.

Ready to start building

- Nice that we have now received this message. Essentially, the verdict is what we were hoping for. The protection is already needed today and we will start the work as soon as possible, says Anna Möller, community building manager in Vellinge Municipality.

The municipality is in the starting pits for planning the protection in its entirety and is preparing to start the first part of the northern Skanör phase. If the decision is not appealed, the municipality is aiming for the construction work to begin in 2021-22. To finance the project, the municipality will seek money from MSB, the Swedish Agency for Social Protection and Preparedness and from the EU.

The municipality's application was rejected in some minor parts. Among other things, a stretch immediately north of road 100 and west of Ljunghusen. The court has also announced a condition which means that the municipality shall allocate a larger natural area east of Skanör as a protected area.
