An employee at "Uber Technologies" and two former employees said that the company laid off hundreds of employees in its offices in Egypt on Wednesday, while making wider cuts in employment in light of the spread of the Corona virus.

The two employees who lost their jobs yesterday, Wednesday, and the employee who kept her job, said that they were informed of the demobilization of about 40% of the employees in the company's offices in Egypt, and they added that the total number of employees ranges between 650 and 700 employees.

This came while Uber announced that it would cut about 3,700 full-time jobs globally, which is equivalent to 17% of its employees.

A company spokesperson declined to give details of the layoffs in Egypt, but said the changes included 46 countries in total.

And Egypt - with a population of more than 100 million people - is the largest market in the Middle East for taxi reservation services, and was among the 10 largest markets for the "Uber" company in the world.

Egypt has taken a series of measures to curb the spread of the new Corona virus, including curfews at night and the closure of schools and mosques.

However, the authorities fell short of imposing public isolation, and taxis remained operational during the day.
