The Commission for Social and Economic Reconstruction, designed to establish agreements between parliamentary forces capable of promoting the reactivation of the country after the coronavirus crisis, has been established in the Congress of Deputies. The new body, despite its objective of reaching consensus, runs the risk of becoming a new 'ring' in which the pro-government and opposition forces fight without quarter.

Its president will be the socialist Patxi López who, aware of the growing political tensions, in his first intervention has urged parliamentary groups to put aside the "quarrels" and the "confrontations", to forget the permanent clash between the Government and the opposition and "to work together to reach the agreements that the country demands".

"That it does not even occur to us for partisan reasons to slide towards disagreement," he warned. In his opinion, "doing nothing is not an option" because the economic and social crisis "is going to worsen and can have devastating effects."

López listed the objectives of the new body of work, insisting on the need to strengthen the public health system as a "fundamental piece of the welfare state", to encourage companies to recover employment as soon as possible and to weave "the busiest network of solidarity and social protection "also urging the European Union, from a common position, to make itself available to" citizen rescue ".

"This commission is not a control session," he said, "it is not a negotiating table between the opposition and the Government, but rather the manifestation of the collective effort of all the representatives of the citizenry to seek together a global, social and economic for our country. "

The socialist deputy has urged taking on the job as "a responsibility, a personal and collective obligation for the future." "We must have the will to overcome partisan quarrels, not to come to win or lose, but to join and work to understand each other, to build a country and society because," he added, there are times when you need high-mindedness, a sense of state, join projects and efforts and add wills ".

The Commission has been summoned next week to start work and approve the operating plan, the contents to be addressed, the experts to be cited and the required documents. The new non-permanent body has a period of two months to present its agreements and conclusions.

The presidency has fallen to the socialist candidate who prevailed in the second round on the popular Ana Pastor in a vote by show of hands in which the representatives of Vox have refused to participate because they considered the Regulation to have been violated. Vox demanded, as his deputy, Ignacio Gil Lázaro, made known, that the vote be carried out by ballot, that is, by secret ballot. The first round of weighted voting ended without an absolute majority, so it was necessary to carry out a second round in which the socialist López obtained 165 supports compared to the 91 obtained by the popular Pastor. In total there were 37 blank votes.

Enrique Santiago (Unidas Podemos) and Guillermo Mariscal (PP) have been appointed to occupy the two vice presidencies; the two secretariats correspond to María Luz Martínez Seijo (PSOE) and Isabel Borrego (PP).
