Damascus announced yesterday, postponing the date of the legislative elections scheduled for this month, for the second time, as part of a series of precautionary measures to combat the emerging corona virus (Covid-19).

The Presidency page on social media reported that "as part of the state's precautionary measures to tackle the Corona virus," President Bashar al-Assad issued a decree "to postpone the elections for members of the People's Assembly for the third legislative round" specified on May 20 to July 19.

In March, the Syrian authorities postponed the date of the legislative elections, which had been scheduled from April 13 to May 20.

The mandate of the Syrian People's Assembly ends from next June, and the number of members of the Syrian People's Assembly reaches 250, distributed equally between the workers and peasants sector and the rest of the people. The Baath Party controls more than half of the members of the Council.

To date, the Syrian government has recorded 44 new infections in the areas controlled by the Corona virus, including three deaths, and the Kurdish self-administration in the northeast of the country has recorded three cases, including one death.

The Syrian government had taken several measures in March to curb the spread of the epidemic, but it finally began to alleviate it as the economic situation in the country became more severe.

With the night curfew still imposed, the government last week reopened markets during the day, as well as restarting public transport between cities and its countryside, and on Wednesday decided to reopen universities and institutes from the end of May.

The Ministry of Awqaf also announced that, starting next Friday, mosques will be reopened "for Friday prayers only," according to "specific health controls."

Assad warned Monday of a "real catastrophe" that exceeds his country's "health and logistical" capabilities in the event of a significant increase in casualties, stressing that the easing of measures should be linked to "controls" to limit the spread of the epidemic.

Corona virus cases in Syria 44, including 3 deaths.
