May 7, 2020 In March Istat estimates a drop in retail sales of February of 20.5% in value and 21.3% in volume. The exceptional drop is determined by the sales of non-food goods, which decrease by 36.0% in value and 36.5% in volume, while those of food goods are stationary in value and slightly decreasing in volume (-0 , 4%).

 In the first quarter of 2020, Istat adds, retail sales recorded a decrease of 5.8% in value and 5.9% in volume compared to the previous quarter. Sales of non-food goods decreased (-11.6% in value and -11.5% in volume), while sales of food goods recorded positive changes (+ 2.0% in value and + 1.9% in volume ).

As regards non-food goods, there is a drop in all sectors. More clothing and fur (-57.1%), Games, toys, sports and camping (-54.2%) and Footwear, leather and travel items (-54.1%) fell. The decrease for pharmaceutical products is slight (-6.3%).

Compared to March 2019, the value of retail sales decreased by 9.3% for large retailers and by 28.2% for companies operating on small surfaces. Sales outside of stores drop by 37.9% while e-commerce is growing (+ 20.7%).
