At least five people have died and some 1,000 have been hospitalized following a gas leak at a chemical plant in Southeast India, police have reported.

"We can confirm that at least five people have died. We will have more confirmations later. At least 70 people are unconscious in area hospitals, and 1,000 are receiving treatment " at various medical centers, said Swaroop Rani of the Visakhapatnam police. .

The same source added that the incident occurred at a plant operated by LG Polymers and that the gas escaped from two 5,000-ton tanks that had been neglected due to confinement by the coronavirus applied in India since late March.

The tanks were abandoned "due to the closure. It led to a chemical reaction and heat was produced inside the tanks , and the gas leaked because of that," Rani said.

"We received an emergency call from the neighbors around 03:30 in the morning. They said there was some gas in the air, " he said.

"We got there right away. You could feel the gas in the air and none of us could stay there for more than a few minutes, " he said, adding that rescue teams began to act immediately.
