After four days of hearing in Kalmar district court, the final pleadings were held.

It was in January of this year that two men, aged 23 and 25, should have tried to rob a grocery store in Läckeby, north of Kalmar. According to the indictment, the robbers allegedly beat a customer bloody with an ax and threatened several children with a revolver.

Several people became eyewitnesses to the incident. The two robbers fled the scene in a car but could later be arrested by police.

The two men were charged with suspicion of, among other things, attempted robbery and weapons crime. One of them was charged with particularly egregious abuse, a criminal offense that is quite unusual.

- It is a serious crime to be chopped with an ax to vital parts of the body, says Deputy Chief Prosecutor Åsa Adolfsson.

She describes the trial as difficult but it has gone well. There were many young people who were prosecutors and were told about what happened in January when the robbery attempt happened.

Both prosecutors were arraigned during the trial.

- My client can neither admit nor deny because he does not remember anything at all. That's because he had a strong intake of drugs, says Thomas Magnusson, 25-year-old's defense lawyer.

The prosecutor asked for a long prison sentence. Judgment will be announced on May 19.
