Latin America and the Caribbean crossed the threshold of 15,000 coronavirus deaths on Wednesday May 6. This region of the world where the pandemic should be at its highest in the coming days has recorded more than 282,000 cases of Covid-19.

Brazil is the most affected country with 7,921 deaths and 114,715 infected. The country has also recorded 6,935 new confirmed cases of contamination and 600 additional deaths in the past 24 hours, a record number of deaths in a day since the epidemic began in the country on February 26.

Next come Mexico (2,271 deaths and 24,905 cases) then Ecuador (1,569 deaths and 31,881 cases).

Several countries such as Ecuador, Colombia and the Dominican Republic have therefore decided to extend containment measures to prevent the spread of the pandemic. On the contrary, certain parts of Brazil have started a process of deconfinement.

Caution

The Pan American Health Organization called on governments to be "cautious" in relaxing these measures and warned that transmission was "still very high" in Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, Chile and Mexico.

In Peru, President Martin Vizcarra ruled out Tuesday any possibility that schools and universities may soon resume class given the scale of the epidemic in the country where 51,100 cases of contamination have been identified for nearly 1,500 death.
