Eight dead at elderly homes in Kramfors - the infection came from a hospital

It was already at the beginning of April that the corona virus entered a nursing home in Kramfors. Infection tracking has now shown that the virus is very likely to enter the elderly via a patient cared for by another ailment at a hospital in the county.

- We were the first municipality in the county affected by the infection, but we are happy that we have competent staff who have been attentive to the infection, says Inger Bergström, head of the welfare administration in Kramfors.

It is believed that the infection spread to three different elderly homes, including Viktoriagården, and a number of elderly people became ill. According to the municipality of Kramfors, eight people have died in two of the homes.

- One of the homes is declared well, where there is no longer infected, says Inger Bergström.

At the same time, a person with very good insight into the situation believes that the number of blacks is probably much higher and believes that some 30 people may have died in covid-19 but that it will not be confirmed because those people have never been tested.

According to Hans Boman, the infection control doctor in Västernorrland, the infection spread in Kramfors is due to lack of hygiene routines.

- How can he say that? It sounds strange. The staff have received the guidelines from the region and I can't imagine not following them, ”says Marianne Persson, section chair of the Municipal Council in Kramfors.

- However, we said early on that people would not lend staff between the accommodation. Then they listened as not, but now they have changed. And you can see now that in the places where you have not lent staff there you are contagious.

Inger Bergström in turn praises his employees. She describes how they were taken to bed and how lonely they felt as the only municipality in the county with known infection in the elderly care.

- It was on March 19 that we were told from the region that it was we who would be responsible for cohort care before then, after all, the information was that everyone would be cared for in hospitals. So we only had a week to prepare, introduce routines and interpret recommendations. Now it has calmed down and we have everything in order, ”she says.
