Reem El-Desouky, an American citizen of Egyptian origin, returned to the United States after the Egyptian authorities released her after arresting her for months in Egypt.

The Washington Freedom Initiative said - in a statement issued yesterday - that the released detainee arrived at her home in Pennsylvania with her 13-year-old son Mustafa.

Reem El-Desouki is an Egyptian-American art teacher who lives in Pennsylvania, and was arrested 300 days after she arrived in Cairo on July 7, 2017 with her son.

The Freedom Initiative statement stated that the Egyptian authorities did not reveal the reasons that led to her arrest.

According to reports, she was accused of managing accounts opposed to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on social media, and her son had previously appealed - in a video clip - US President Donald Trump to intervene to ensure the release of his mother.

Reem El-Desouki's release comes days after US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo asked the Egyptian authorities to release the American citizens detained in Egypt, according to sites concerned with the conditions of detainees in Egyptian prisons.

The move also coincided with French and international statements that include fears of human rights conditions in Egypt, following the death of young director Shadi Habash in prison.
