Cao Binghai: All right. I went to Hebei Agricultural University in the fall of 1981 and graduated from the university in July 1985 to teach. At the end of 1983, the fellow villagers of Hebei Agricultural University who are currently registered must organize a gathering. At this gathering, we invited Lu Yulan, deputy secretary of Zhengding County Party Committee, who was studying in Hebei Agricultural University, to attend. Comrade Lu Yulan was a well-known labor model at that time. In September 1983, she went to the Agricultural Economics Department of Hebei Agricultural University for further study. In the meantime, she lived in a girls' dormitory and usually communicated more with our regular students.
Before the party that day, Xiao Yuliang, the president of our fellowship association, and several students went to Baoding Railway Station to meet Lu Yulan. When Lu Yulan came to the school, he invited us to sit down at the roadside restaurant and ordered the buns for everyone. He took out his own buns and pickles from the schoolbag. Cao Binghai: Everyone was very excited after reading the letter. It was a surprise that we did not expect to receive this letter from Secretary Xi. This letter represents the care of the county party committee, the county government, and the people of the county for our students who are currently registered. It reflects the importance and cherish of Secretary Xi for talents, and makes us feel the warmth of our hometown and the responsibility we shoulder.
Two letters from Secretary Xi's letter touched us greatly. First, Secretary Xi is very humble. The letter said, "I have always been concerned about you in the past, I am very sorry, I hope to get an understanding." Interview Team: After the letter, I heard that Comrade Xi Jinping also invited you to return to your hometown for summer research in rural areas. You can actually experience the social conditions, people's conditions and development of your hometown. Could you specifically talk about the research?
Cao Binghai: It was a hometown meeting before the summer vacation of 1984. Xiao Yuliang and everyone said: "The county party secretary wants to invite you to return to your hometown for social research in the summer." After hearing this news, everyone was very excited. More than 20 people signed up, and the county has prepared a survey plan for us in advance, so as soon as the summer vacation, more than 20 of us went to the county education bureau to register.
The county education bureau at the time was quite rudimentary and operated in a school-like place. Because we had too many people and the weather was extremely hot, the comrades of the Education Bureau took us under a sycamore tree. Everyone gave us a chair to sit together and there was no table, so we had a meeting. I remember it was a very large sycamore tree with lush foliage, and all of us were in the shade under a tree.
After the arrival of Secretary Xi, we shook hands with each of our classmates. We hadn't seen the county party secretary before. At first, everyone felt very cautious. I remember that Secretary Xi was wearing a navy blue short-sleeved shirt, clean and tidy, with a lean hairstyle and a smiling face, which made us feel very kind. Secretary Xi first started a casual conversation with us. He speaks slowly and mildly, and is very approachable. Our restraints disappeared instantly.
This time, my direct impression of Secretary Xi is more profound than the indirect impression of the last letter: one is because the secretary of the county party committee is very young. At that time, he was just 30 years old, and he was seven or eight years older than us; the other was Secretary Xi. Tall and handsome, especially his hands are particularly warm-that kind of thick feeling, there is no "official shelf" to talk to us at all. At that time, the Education Bureau did not prepare a table for Secretary Xi, so he took a chair and sat among us to mobilize us. Looking back now, the face-to-face conversation between us and Secretary Xi has a great impact on my later growth.
Interview Team: At this mobilization meeting, what did Comrade Xi Jinping and everyone talk about?
Cao Binghai: Secretary Xi had a discussion with us for nearly two hours. Secretary Xi talked a lot, not only about the background significance of this investigation, but also the ways and means of doing a good research. He didn't have a manuscript, he just sat there and started to speak. It was very vivid, not boring, very real, and high-level. Everyone listened very carefully. At that time, there was no video recording, and now I can't find the notebook I recorded, which is a pity.
What impressed me the most was the study of the secretary. He said that we have to learn endlessly, and everything we learn is useful. At the same time of learning, we must find ways to apply, summarize in the application, and then use for learning. Engaging in such rural surveys is a learning process and a process of self-improvement. Later, when I became a teacher myself, I increasingly felt that Secretary Xi made sense. Knowledge needs to be learned, and it will be used after learning. Knowledge will become deeper and deeper. Even if you just start learning, you will find a place where it can be applied.
Secretary Xi said that if you do research, you can not only deepen the knowledge learned in the classroom, but also discover many things outside the classroom. For example, he said, don't underestimate a grain of fertilizer. The amount of fertilizer, the distance from the root, the depth of the planting, and the watering of the fertilizer are not the same. The problems found through the survey have an effect on our positive and definite development, and are more effective on your own improvement.
When talking about how to conduct research, Secretary Xi also emphasized that research should not only look at superficial things, but to discover the mechanism behind them through superficial things, and then find a solution to the problem. The process of finding and thinking about solutions to problems will definitely use what you have learned. He said humorously that if you go to investigate, it may start that the masses are not welcome, so how to make the masses welcome you is a process of improving ability.
Finally, Secretary Xi also said two things: first, without a penny subsidy, everyone brought their own dry food; second, the means of transportation were bicycles, and they used their own bicycles to investigate. Interview Team: At this survey mobilization meeting, did Comrade Xi Jinping introduce the situation and development ideas in the county to everyone?
Cao Binghai: When Secretary Xi was at the right time, he published the article "The Cut of Love" in the "Chinese Youth" magazine. The article wrote: "To love your hometown, you must first understand your hometown. Deep feelings must be profound As the basis for understanding. At this research mobilization meeting, in addition to learning and research, Secretary Xi introduced us to the development ideas of Zhengding County and looked forward to the future of Zhengding County. He said that China's economy will definitely develop greatly, and the economy of Zhengding County will definitely develop. These practices of Secretary Xi made Zhengding's political style a new one.
Interview Team: I heard that Comrade Xi Jinping invited everyone to eat meat buns after the mobilization meeting. Can you tell us about the situation?
Cao Binghai: It was almost noon after Secretary Xi had finished speaking, and he and Xiong Zhenli, director of the Education Bureau, took us to lunch. On the way from the Education Bureau to the hotel, Secretary Xi talked and laughed. Although Secretary Xi is young, in my impression everyone calls him "Old Xi". In Zhengding, this is a respectable title, which shows that he gets along very well with each other. When he arrived at the restaurant, Secretary Xi said that he would do the meal. He said: "The students are back, and their hometown is such a hometown. The status quo is such a situation.
On that day, the restaurant we ate was the best restaurant in Zhengding County, called "Kaiyuan Hotel", and it was a very famous bun shop. It was the best restaurant in Zhengding County at the time, with more dining tables, more benches, no air conditioning, and an old electric fan on the ceiling spinning around, feeling like it was about to fall back and forth ,loud voice. The buns that Secretary Xi asked us to eat were stuffed with meat, and the students ate very deliciously. I was thin and short at the time, and I was a little shy. I did n’t sit at the table with Secretary Xi. Secretary Xi stood up and called me: "Cao Binghai, eat more, and eat the buns casually." "After eating, Let's count how many cages we have eaten. "Xi Secretary didn't eat much, he always greeted everyone and made everyone feel welcome. The students are so passionate about the trainee secretary, they will not be restrained, and have a good meal, which is really fragrant! Being able to eat a meat bun and eat it casually is a dream for me. I remember Secretary Bi Xixi told everyone that this is the best restaurant in his hometown. If there is a better restaurant, I will invite everyone to eat in a better restaurant.
After lunch that day, more than 20 of our classmates were assigned to various research units. Those who engage in animal husbandry go to the Animal Husbandry Bureau, and those who engage in plant protection and cultivation report to the Agriculture Bureau. Now think about it, it is 30 days since the county is so big, it is impossible to conduct a comprehensive investigation. Secretary Xi had a plan in mind and assigned a division of research based on our major. The Animal Husbandry Bureau arranged for me to go to Hanjialou Township to investigate the situation of raising rabbits and chickens. This township is a place in the northwest corner of our county, about 20 kilometers away from the county.
Interview Team: You go to the survey, do you know the village? Are they ready?
Cao Binghai: Some research is now that the leaders say hello, people will do. At that time, we did a survey, and the villages and villages didn't know it at all. The secretary Xi was to understand the most real situation. I remember at that time we still had doubts, and the villages and villages did not know, would n’t it be unwelcome for us to investigate? Secretary Xi said to us: "Other people do not welcome you, you let others welcome, this is also a long-term skill."
When I researched, when I entered the village, no matter the man or the woman, I asked people when I saw them: How many villages are there in your town? Which village is next to it? Who raised chickens and rabbits in the village? Who raises well, who raises badly? There are more than a dozen villages in Hanjialou Township, and I traveled to every village. Some villages have a variety of farming forms that cannot be investigated in a day. It took me a month to find out the road map by asking, and then follow the road map to see the truth, make records, and then perform classification, comparison, analysis, and filing. These research practices have enabled me to master the basic skills of research.
Interview Team: I heard that you are focusing on investigating the situation of raising chickens and rabbits. Can you tell us about specific research and feelings?
Cao Binghai: What I accepted was a survey task concerning the situation of raising chickens and rabbits. This month, I rode my bike from home every morning to go to the village and return home at night. I want to know who raises chickens and rabbits. Sometimes I ask how to raise them. Then I go to the house to see what the chicken coops and rabbit coops look like. Then I ask how many have been raised and how are they raised?
After investigation, I realized the truth of "practice the true knowledge" more deeply. For example, raising chickens, some chicken coops are made of broken bricks into a small cage. Even if you squat, you can't get in, you can only get in This is considered good. Some people live outside the village, and the farmland is outside the wall. In the morning, they drove the chickens into the field. At night, the chickens returned by themselves. If they were lost, they went to the field to find them. I need to figure out the type of rearing. At that time, I went to research to draw pictures. What kind of hen house is the real large-scale chicken? What is the size? Account. When Secretary Xi mobilized us, he emphasized that some things should not only look at superficial things, but to see that there are certain causes behind the things. For example, you need to know why he built such a large chicken coop and why he can keep so many chickens? Why not keep raising more? and many more. Different scales have a balance that restricts it. Secretary Xi said: Do n’t underestimate a chicken running outside. If a chicken runs into the field and eats the wheat grains dropped in the summer wheat field, the meat produced by the chicken has no feed cost, but the eggs may be laid irregularly. There are few eggs. If the chickens are kept in captivity, the chickens are not allowed to go out, and the chickens have to give their own food. This cost is higher, but the chickens lay more eggs and grow faster. At the price of the time, this farming Is the method appropriate and inappropriate? For these, Secretary Xi asked us to use our professional knowledge to calculate this economic account.
Another example is raising rabbits. Some homes are built with two floors of rabbit houses, and one person is tall, like a small building. But some families dig a cellar underground and make a well. Rabbits have a habit of digging holes when they give birth, and they ran into this cellar and made holes, usually a few meters away, laid hay in, and ripped off the hair of their two rows of breasts to make a nest So that it became a delivery room. After giving birth to a rabbit, the rabbit feeds her milk in the hole. When she comes out, the hole is covered with soil. When the next time she is fed, she will pick up the soil. The air inside can ensure the rabbit's breath. Can't die. When the rabbit was weaned, the big rabbit led the little rabbit out. The second method is more "soil", but it saves money very much. This is the wisdom of the people. I have carefully drawn pictures of these realities. How many holes in the cellar do we have to lie down to see how many eyes there are. How many rabbits and how many female rabbits are there in each house? What diameter cellars and holes are there? How many rabbits are born at a time? How long are the rabbits when they leave the hole? How old are you? What do you feed after you come out and how long do you sell? How much to sell ... all researched clearly.
Who are these rabbits and chickens sold to? At that time, it was also our research question. From the supply and marketing cooperatives to various villages to buy, farmers can also sell rabbits to the supply and marketing cooperatives. At that time, regardless of fat and thin rabbits, regardless of size, you can sell anytime you want. In fact, feeding the rabbit and growing it for a long time may sell more money, but some people are anxious to use the money and sell it earlier. The same is true for chickens and eggs. The people of the supply and marketing cooperatives go to the villages to buy. Get funds in time.
Secretary Xi demanded that our task is not a special single survey, but that we should extend our horizons to do broader social surveys. He said that when necessary in the survey, even open the pot to see how many people there are, how big the pot is, what they eat, and a comprehensive understanding of the surveyed family. During the investigation, we sometimes have to go to a fellow villager, and Secretary Xi said, "You have to pay for other people's meals." "You can't dismiss other people's meals because they eat that way." Their meals are good or bad. In fact, they are closely related to the chickens and rabbits they raise. They are related to the income of their families. If the meals are not good, they will definitely have less income.
During the month of research, I took my father ’s two or eight bikes every morning and took my buns. I went home at night to sort out what I saw and heard. I finally wrote a research report. Report-"Investigation Report on Zhengding Chicken and Rabbit Industry". It now appears that this report may not have much effect on the development of Zhengding County, but it is a milestone improvement for me. The unique vision, method and thinking method of analyzing the problems of Secretary Xi, and the pattern and feelings expressed by the subordinates and the "talent" in his eyes made me use it for life.
After that, the research report was transcribed in three copies on carbon paper and handed over to the Animal Husbandry Bureau. I heard that the Animal Husbandry Bureau and the Agriculture Bureau have shown the reports of 20 of us to Secretary Xi. After reading it, he was very happy and discussed with them about the development of Zhengding's agriculture and animal husbandry. My research report may be because of the combination of pictures and texts, which is more vivid and also praised by Secretary Xi.
Interview Team: How do you feel through this work contact with Comrade Xi Jinping?
Cao Binghai: The first feeling is "real". I feel that Secretary Xi is such a person: don't look at the surface of things, see the actual effect. For our research, he is a person who wants to "dry goods". He asked us to "research honestly and improve ourselves in the research", "The research report should be written" really "-don't write praise, write more about the situation that the government department has not mastered and what aspects need to be improved." Secretary Xi said less and did more during Zhengding's work and devote himself to development. He turned the pursuit of development into real work and real problem solving.
The second feeling is "toughness". We felt an inherent tenacity and perseverance from Secretary Xi at the time. I think this is his character. The third feeling is that Secretary Xi is very good at doing work for young students. The clerk Xi mobilized us for heuristic mobilization. He just gave directions, no frames, no answers. The fourth feeling is that Secretary Xi is very strategic and scientific. Many years later, I realized the deep intention of Secretary Xi to let us return to our hometown for investigation. He wants to grasp the agricultural and rural work of Zhengding, and does not clap his brains to make decisions. He needs to get the most authentic and first-hand information from the countryside. Most of our agricultural university students come from the countryside. After receiving some education at the university, the angle of looking back at the problem is different. Returning college students to their hometown for investigation not only provides us with an opportunity to exercise, but also provides reliable information for county decisions. At that time, he was just in his early 30s and showed such strategic thinking and steady working methods.
Interview Team: Comrade Xi Jinping led and guided you to conduct a rural survey. How has this affected your current work?
Cao Binghai: The impact is very big. Secretary Xi took us to do research.
