The family of a 31-year-old man, who died overnight Thursday to Friday at the Saint-Denis police station (Seine-Saint-Denis) where he was drunk, filed a complaint for "failure to assist person in danger, "we learned Monday from his lawyer.

The complaint, filed on May 3, aims to "participate in the ongoing investigation to allow the establishment of the circumstances of his death and the possible responsibilities that could be incurred," explained Arié Alimi, the parents' and brother of the deceased.

"He should have been monitored"

The death occurred overnight while the man was in administrative detention for manifest drunkenness, according to the prosecution of Bobigny. Following his arrest, he had been examined by a doctor who had found his condition compatible with his detention, according to a police source. He was found dead in the sobering-up cell, she added.

The Saint-Denis police station was seized of the investigation to find the causes of death. An autopsy must be performed. "Given his alcoholic status, he should have been subject to close and constant monitoring to ensure that his condition does not deteriorate," said the family in its complaint, consulted by AFP. In particular, she criticized the doctor for not having asked for hospital care instead, given her "serious condition".

The family also asked that the investigation not be carried out by the services of the Saint-Denis police station, place of the facts, in order to "avoid any suspicion on the conditions of investigation".
